Open Letter: Increase pedestrian safety at Oldswinford Cross and adjoining roads

Open Letter: Increase pedestrian safety at Oldswinford Cross and adjoining roads
The Issue
The Council House
4 Priory Road
Dudley
DY1 1HF
Subject: Oldswinford Crossing and surrounding areas,
Dear Cllr Damien Corfield,
We the undersigned are writing to express our strong concerns over the junction between Hagley Road, Glasshouse Hill and Heath Lane, commonly referred to as the ‘Oldswinford Cross’.
We believe that this site lacks sufficient safety measures to prevent pedestrian and vehicular collisions. Given that this crossing is used by hundreds of school children and college students every day, this is a matter that we believe needs to be solved as a matter of urgency.
We ask for the following safety measures to be implemented:
- Widening of the pavement closest to The Cross Pub on Hagely Road.
- Further protection for pedestrians at all four crossings.
- An extra sequence allowing for more time for pedestrians to cross.
- Appropriate traffic calming measures on Heath Lane and Glass House Hill
In 2019 a petition was launched requesting the installation of a pedestrian crossing on the Oldswinford Cross. While this request was not granted we are pleased to note that an additional pedestrian refuge was installed subsequently on Heath Lane by Dudley Council.
We hope that similar action will be taken here to make this crossing less of a danger to the motorists and pedestrians alike.
We look forward to your response and working with you to improve safety at the crossing,
Kind regards,
Cllr Andrew Tromans, Matthew Broad, Paul Hebron and Sarah Marley (authors of this letter)
