The Issue

We, the undersigned members of the Venice-area  and beach community, respectfully ask the City to explore restoring pedestrian access to the beach at South Jetty.

We are not asking the City to reopen the damaged jetty or any area that is unsafe, and we respect legitimate private property.

We are simply asking the City to determine:

Can a safe and lawful walking route to the beach be provided while the damaged South Jetty remains closed?

If the answer is yes, we ask the City to pursue it. If the answer is no, we ask the City to clearly identify what prevents it.

South Jetty has been an important part of this community for generations. We believe it is worth working together to find a solution.

Keep what is unsafe closed. Protect private property. Restore beach access where it is safe and lawful.

“Venice City Council addressed this issue during Tuesday's City Council meeting, which can be viewed online here: https://venice.granicus.com/player/clip/1979?view_id=2&redirect=true Scroll down to 26-0753 South Jetty Beach Access (Mayor Pachota), click on that item, and the video will jump to it. Following public comment and Council discussion, Council voted 7-0 to direct staff to research and bring back possible solutions for pedestrian access to the South Jetty, Humphris Park specifically, and to add the South Jetty to the City's 2027 state and federal legislative priorities list (It is on the current federal priorities list, which can be viewed here: https://www.venicegov.com/government/mayor-city-council/federal-legislative-priorities.) It should be noted that the jetty bulkheads and rock revetment are owned and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
