Open horse trails in Vigo County, Indiana

Open horse trails in Vigo County, Indiana
The Issue
As a lifelong equestrian and resident of Vigo County, Indiana, I've seen firsthand how difficult it has become to find accessible trails for horseback riding. Our county, along with its neighboring areas, boasts a robust equestrian community with countless riders who are passionate about their horses. Yet, despite the rich presence of equestrian enthusiasts, there isn't any public land where we can freely ride and enjoy our beloved activity.
This absence of designated horse trails affects not just us, the riders, but also the local economy and community spirit. Horseback riding is not only a cherished pastime but also a sport that fosters physical health, mental relaxation, and bonding with nature. By opening up public lands in Vigo County to horseback riders, we can promote outdoor activities, support local equine businesses, and enrich the quality of life for residents.
Counties surrounding Vigo have recognized the value in accommodating equestrians. For example, Clay and Sullivan counties have dedicated equestrian trails in certain parks, which have proven to be popular and economically beneficial. It’s time that Vigo County follows suit.
Creating public horse trails can be achieved without disrupting the needs of other outdoor activities. Different use areas have successfully integrated multi-purpose trails, ensuring safe and enjoyable experiences for all outdoor enthusiasts. We propose identifying existing trails and assessing these for potential equestrian use.
Moreover, opening horse trails offers educational opportunities for all residents. Schools and clubs could leverage these trails for equine learning experiences, offering students unique interactions with nature and animals.
We urge the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department and Indiana DNR, alongside local policymakers, to recognize the untapped potential of our equestrian community and the benefits of establishing public horse trails. Let's work together to make Vigo County more inclusive for all types of outdoor activities.
Please sign this petition to support the development of horse trails in Vigo County, and help us bring the joys of horseback riding to everyone in our community.
