For this week’s update, we direct our attention to consider a subject which rarely is talked about- the life long impact of miscarriages of justice. We also remember the forgotten child victims whose parents were miscarriage of justice victims.
Thanks to Nicole, Annette Hewins daughter and her excellent podcasts, she has highlighted the lifelong impact of how being wrongly imprisoned affected her mother’s life. Nicole Jacob revisits her mother’s case and the devastation of this miscarriage of justice upon her entire family.
Annette Hewins, along with Donna Clarke, was wrongfully arrested for a crime she didn’t commit and both were imprisoned. in fact, it was logically impossible for her to commit the crime. Annette Hewins daughter talks in detail from a child’s lens growing up witnessing the lifelong effects of the wrongdoing towards her mother and talks about the devastating effects.
Even though Annette Hewins won her appeal, and Donna Clarke’s appeal was also allowed and a re-trial ordered, the impact of being wrongly accused led to Annette Hewins’ premature death.. Donna Clarke’s retrial was blocked on the grounds of double jeopardy. The double jeopardy laws were reformed in 2001 and the law was later changed in the Criminal Justice Act 2003.
