The Issue

In our South Fulton community, my daughter and many other students face a challenging predicament. Since the age of two, my daughter has been nurtured in an international school environment where she learned Mandarin and engaged in various arts-based instructional opportunities. Now, as she approaches the fifth grade, her educational journey is at risk due to the lack of comparable schooling options in our area. This is not just a personal battle; it's an issue that affects numerous families in both the Atlanta Public Schools and Fulton County Schools systems.

The demand for diverse educational offerings is critical. Many families yearn for institutions that not only emphasize traditional academic success but also prioritize artistic expression, cultural competence, and language acquisition. Our children deserve the right to continue their education in a setting that embraces these values and fosters their growth into informed, artistic, and culturally aware individuals.

Therefore, we propose the establishment of the Ananse International School of the Arts (AISA) in South Fulton. With a mission to cultivate self-actualized learners empowered with artistry and knowledge, AISA will serve as a beacon for educational excellence. By focusing on global cultural competence, humanization, and artistic expression, AISA promises to provide a robust learning environment that equips students to contribute meaningfully to a more just world.

Statistically, arts education has been linked to higher student achievement and engagement. According to a report by the Arts Education Partnership, students involved in arts learning experiences score better on standardized tests, have higher GPAs, and are less likely to drop out of school. Establishing AISA in our community would not only benefit individual students like my daughter, but would also enhance the entire educational landscape of South Fulton and Atlanta.

The benefits of such a school are numerous. With adaptable curricula that incorporate language immersion and a focus on international arts education, students will be ready to thrive in a globalized world. Positioning South Fulton as a hub for innovative education can attract families and educators dedicated to making a positive impact on society.

We call on community leaders, school district administrators, and all stakeholders to support the creation of Ananse International School of the Arts. Together, we can fill the current educational gap and provide our children with the tools they need to succeed and make a difference in the world.
