Open a local post office in Kemptown
The Issue
The community of Kemptown, neighboring the Sussex County Hospital, has faced significant inconvenience since our local post office closed a couple of years ago. Without this essential service, residents are compelled to travel long distances to access postal services, causing undue stress and hardship for many, especially the elderly and those with mobility challenges.
The absence of a nearby post office affects everyone: busy professionals, small business owners, and students, who now must take time out of their day to make these essential errands, instead of devoting themselves to work, family, or studies. For many families in Kemptown, where transport costs represent an added financial strain, this is not just an inconvenience, it is a barrier to receiving and sending vital correspondence and parcels.
Moreover, the growing population around the Sussex County Hospital area, including staff and patients, magnifies the necessity for a local post office. Hospitals by their nature generate a need for communication, both personal and business-related, and the absence of a nearby post office complicates this further.
The solution? Reopen a local post office in Kemptown. This isn’t just about restoring an amenity; it's about nurturing our community's welfare and supporting its economic and social fabric. Keeping a post office in the heart of Kemptown will provide convenient access to essential services, support local businesses by easing logistics, and enhance community cohesion by providing a space where community interactions occur.
We urge the local council to recognize the importance of this service and prioritize the reopening of a post office over other developments. This is not just a matter of convenience, but a necessity for the well-being of our community in Kemptown.
We have made genuine efforts to find a way to reopen and run the post office ourselves. We submitted applications and approached the council with the aim of demonstrating that keeping the post office open would be beneficial to the local community. We are willing to put in the time, effort and commitment required to make it work.
Unfortunately, our application was rejected and the property was subsequently withdrawn from the market. We have tried to understand the reasons behind this decision and have made further efforts to engage with the council and explain why we believe reopening the post office would be a positive outcome for local residents.
At present, we have not been given a clear explanation as to why the property was withdrawn from the market.
We are not asking for something unreasonable. We are willing to put in the work, take on the responsibility and do everything we can to make the post office a success for the community.
Please sign this petition to show your support for a local post office in Kemptown, and help us restore a vital piece of community infrastructure.
