Onyx Property Management Must Drop Above-Guideline Rent Increases

Onyx Property Management Must Drop Above-Guideline Rent Increases
The Issue
For the next two years, Manitoba’s Residential Tenancies Branch has set the rent increase guideline at 0% to account for the social and economic impacts of the pandemic. Yet, Onyx Property Management has decided that this is a good time to carry out prestige renovations in order to apply for huge above-guideline rent increases. At 149 Langside Street, they made prestige renovations in the halls that brought no benefits to tenants and then notified tenants they would be applying for a 22% rent increase!
This is not the only Onyx building to receive a notice for an over 20% rent increase this year.
They’ve offered a rent discount to some buildings as if this should comfort tenants, but rent discounts are just another way landlords get around rent control. Onyx can offer the discount this year, then repeal it next year and substantially raise the amount tenants pay each month without formally raising the rent.
Tenants in some of these buildings have organized a collective challenge by sharing information, forming unified demands and tactics, and working with legal support to fight the increase together. However, we need community support!
Onyx is playing an active role in displacing low income residents in West Broadway, the West End and other neighbourhoods in Winnipeg. Many tenants will have no choice but to leave their homes if Onyx's rent increases are approved. Tenants and communities must stand together to tell Onyx we will not accept this kind of displacement in our neighbourhoods.
This is NOT the time for rent increases.
Please sign this petition to support tenants’ call for Onyx Property Management to:
1. Drop the above-guideline rent increases and to respect the 0% guideline issued by the Residential Tenancies Branch for 2022-2023
2. End unwanted renovations and consult with tenants for all future renovations in their homes
