Durham is one of the fastest growing regions in Ontario and the choice of many Canadians to live and raise their families. The increasing population and multiple housing projects by numerous builders have made the region an extension of Toronto, and at the same time has generated more revenue for local governments to build better infrastructure.

The recent price increases in the housing market have had a major impact in the Durham region with house prices now on par with neighboring regions (Toronto, Peel, York etc.). However, property taxes in Durham are significantly higher in comparison to the rest of the GTA.

As residents of Durham region, we are facing challenges with paying higher property taxes along with the increase in house prices. This especially affects long term residents of the region who want to upsize or downsize their homes with new preconstruction houses within the region.

We would like to request for property taxes to be revisited so that the price of new housing projects can be factored in and for taxes to be reduced for all towns and cities in the Durham region (Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby, Clarington, Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge) so that they can be aligned with other similar towns and cities. We believe that this will control the cost of living in this region and further attract more people to buy and settle within Durham.
