Save Ontario's Great Lakes

Save Ontario's Great Lakes

The Issue

In today’s world, plastic water bottles have become essential to consumers. Large companies such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola have a large reliance on plastic water bottles which they use to distribute their product.  In Canada, about 2 billion water bottles are consumed annually. This averages to about 5.6 million bottles consumed daily. This is a large issue because of environmental concerns. Plastic water bottles are recyclable but only a few are actually recycled. Only about 30% is recycled. So what happens to the other 70%? A lot of it gets dumped into the ocean. In Canadian plastic water bottles and bottle caps were the top items found in bodies of water in 2019. This is a big issue especially for Torontonians because the great lakes that surround Toronto have about 22 million pounds of plastic dumped in them every year. Obviously this causes great environmental concern.  This is an issue because it will affect the environment and the groundwater there. My ideal outcome would be for us to reduce the amount of plastic we dump as waste by eliminating plastic water bottles in Ontario and switching to reusable water bottles or by finding a way to recycle a higher percentage of plastic. Please sign this petition so that we can show the Ontario Government that we care about our Great Lakes and the environment so, we can get their attention and try to work with them to create change. We only have one Earth and we need to treat it better.
