Some information of importance to our campaign came to us via City of Sydney Labor Councilor Linda Scott this week. She writes: "This week , as part of the Local Government NSW Conference, I personally called on Premier Mike Baird to accept the protest message so strongly sent to his Government at the recent City of Sydney Local Government elections, and repeal the City of Sydney gerrymandered voting system. The non-residential roll is a clear attempt by the Baird Liberal Government to gerrymander the City of Sydney Council with conservative business votes for their own benefit, and hinder the electoral chances of progressive movements. Democracy should be about representing the interests of people, not property. I was disappointed to hear the Premier stand by his gerrymandered voting system in the City of Sydney. Futhermore, he refused to rule out that the system would not be expanded to other Local Government areas across NSW. I will continue alongside my NSW Labor state colleagues to fight for the non-residential roll to be repealed, and call on my fellow City of Sydney Councillors to do the same." Thanks Linda for speaking up on this important issue. Read more news on the proceedings of the recent NSW local government conference in the linked SMH article.
