SW/Niger Delta Forest Project started this petition to Ondo State government and

It's the year 2020. A hunter can pay a maximum fine of TWO HUNDRED NIGERIAN NAIRA (N200 is equivalent to $0.52), YES, that's about half of one dollar to kill any wild animal even an ENDANGERED species, such as chimpanzees and elephants. No, that's not all, one can purchase a special license to kill an elephant for TWENTY NAIRA (N20). OH YES, the same wildlife that generates millions of dollars through tourism for some governments is being slaughtered indiscriminately. In which part of the world could this ever be a reality? In Ondo State, Nigeria.

Ondo State Wild Animals Preservation Law CAP 129 Volume VI of 1978 is outdated and unenforceable, much like a bladder blockage, it undermines the rule of law and retards progress not only of conservation but of the system in general. The case for the review and revision of this law is unambiguous; we need modern laws that help to 1) Reverse the rapid decline of the wild animals, forests and biodiversity in general in Ondo State and, 2) Achieve the State Government’s overarching goal to protect lives, livelihoods and the posterity of the people of Ondo State by ensuring that the natural environment is sustainably managed.

Unacceptable practices that persist due to inadequate enforcement and lack of sanctions include the large-scale clearing of existing forest in the so-called Forest Reserves for agriculture; the widespread hunting of wildlife species including those species protected under national and international laws ratified by Nigeria.

Why you must care? Chimpanzee populations in southwestern Nigeria (and Ondo State is located in the southwest of Nigeria) form a distinct group from the four recognized subspecies of chimpanzees. This is to suggest that chimpanzee population(s) in southwest of Nigeria are special, they can be found in Ise forest reserve in Ekiti State, Idanre forest cluster and its environs in Ondo State and Omo forest reserve in Ogun State. This is not to suggest they are widespread and thriving. In fact, the population(s) is very small and isolated, only few individuals remain hanging on by a thread. It is in this very dire situation for chimpanzees that wildlife laws are practically non-existent to ensure even the minimum protection for this relic and unique population of great apes. In fact, in Ondo State, anyone can be caught red-handed killing a chimpanzee and will get away with it.

By signing this petition, you too are calling the Ondo State Government to Act -

Conserve our species today or we will lose them FOREVER!
