Omar’s Story started this petition to The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP Prime Minister and

In the early hours of 20th February 2020, Omar Ramzan was involved in a brawl in defence of his father, Saghawat Ramzan, and uncle, Waseem Ramzan, who is now tragically deceased.   They were awoken by the noise of a great number men climbing over a fence into their back garden.

Omar was wearing nothing on his top and was barefoot. He was just wearing a pair of trousers.  He must have been terrified at such an onslaught.

Omar bravely tried to defend his family against one of the gang. In the chaos that followed, a shot was fired from a crossbow hitting Waseem Ramzan.  Another shot was then fired again which hit the attacking gang member.

On 23rd February 2021, Omar was charged with murder of the gang member and manslaughter of his uncle under the Joint Enterprise Law.  Omar did not kill anyone that night, nor did he intend to. He was simply trying to defend his family.  This is not a case of cold, calculated murder. He could have had no knowledge that one man was going to fire and fire again.  He was doing nothing more than most of us would do if our family was under attack.

The Police have portrayed Omar to be a drug dealing gang member. They have fed this line to the media and the media have pursued it to such an extent that the public were braying for blood. The jury are members of the public.  Members of the public believe what they read. This was evidenced by the vile comments that were posted on social media. The photographs which have been supplied and published are subjective and do not show the true events. The media continued this theme throughout the trial, which was widely published.

Omar has never been involved with drugs and despite the best efforts of the police, no evidence of any drugs involvement could be produced. There is no evidence because Omar is not guilty.  Omar has never been in trouble before and had not got a police record before that night. He certainly is not and never has been a member of any sort of gang.  He is a much loved, kind hearted young man who had not even met his co-accused before that night.

19 men have been charged with offences, including aggravated (armed) burglary relating to this incident and are currently on bail and awaiting trial.

Omar Ramzan is 24 years old, he is a kind person with a big heart. Omar had a bright future ahead of him. He graduated from Lancaster University with a First Class Honors Degree and pursued a career in auditing at a top Accountancy firm in Birmingham.  His family are broken by the events of that night. Omar's family and friends are standing by him throughout this nightmare as they know he is innocent of these dreadful charges.

The tragic incident that resulted in the conviction of Sageer Mohammed and Omar was captured on CCTV footage. The police can see that both Sageer and Omar did not murder either victim. The pathology report also confirmed that both deaths were not a result of either Sageer's or Omar's actions. Their actions did not even cause serious harm. However, as a result of the 'Joint Enterprise' doctrine in criminal law, they have been punished for the actions of another.

Two men have tragically died as a result of that night and their families and friends are suffering.  It is appalling that Omar's family have to suffer still more heartache due to this unjust law and the actions of others. Omar is not guilty of this offence and he has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Omar is an honest, hardworking, decent young man.  His character and integrity have been shredded and his life has been ruined.  Omar does not deserve this.

Sageer Mohammed has also been found guilty of murder and manslaughter. He has also been sentenced for 20 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

This is so wrong.

There have been many concerns amongst politicians, academics, and those alike about the motivations behind the Joint Enterprise law. In fact, the law is very controversial. JENGbA (Joint Enterprise – Not Guilty by Association) stated that the Joint Enterprise law is inherently unethical. The law has resulted in many people being convicted of serious crimes, such as murder, that they did not, and never intended to commit.

The Joint Enterprise law is unjust, unfair, discriminatory, and has taken too many innocent lives.

Please help raise awareness for Omar Ramzan and Sageer Mohammed. Their lives have been stolen by a corrupt system.
