Omaha Performing Arts must make a promise to the city.

The City of Omaha, HDR, and Omaha Performing Arts have proposed a land deal that includes three buildings built in 1884, 1891, and 1900. It provides a city block for HDR to build a new headquarters but only if Omaha Performing Arts receives ownership of the historic buildings.
Unfortunately, OPAS Board President John Gottschalk has indicated in newspaper interviews that the buildings will be demolished to accommodate unspecified future expansion. [Full coverage] This is unacceptable.
As citizens, we want a vibrant, diverse city that allows for growth while honoring our shared past. These buildings represent Omaha in its dusty days, when strong people forged a new reality on a grassy plain. They have significance in defining our city.
We demand that Omaha Performing Arts signs a binding agreement to preserve the buildings in their current conditions. They must agree to care for them, as they do with The Orpheum Theater.
This means that HDR can build, and Omaha Performing Arts can expand in the future without damaging our architectural heritage. Please act before the Omaha City Council votes to approve this agreement on February 23, 2016.
