Taylor Wimpey are putting forward proposals to de-register valuable Village Green land with the intention of building houses in its place. This is an unacceptable loss for both biodiversity and the local community.

We the local residents and management agents for this area believe the proposals put forward by Taylor Wimpey that seek the ‘release’ of part of the existing Woodcock Hill Village Green and the subsequent ‘replacement’ with a greenspace  does not adequately represent nor compensate the valuable green space lost. This is to the detriment of both the local community and environment.

Woodcock Hill Village Green is located in Borehamwood, Hertsmere; consisting of over 21 hectares of Woodland, Meadow, Ponds, Grassland and more. Whilst not just a site valued for its biodiversity interest, the village green is also known for it's historical importance as the location of one of the beacons used to warn the country of the Spanish Armada, but equally as a location for the whole community to enjoy and connect with the great outdoors.

Green spaces across Hertsmere are already in decline and under constant threat. Our green spaces offer a multitude of benefits to the community not just environmentally, but also socially and economically. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has shown us how important access to nature is for our health and well-being. Now imagine if that space where you escaped the unending misery of COVID-19 was ripped away from your local area.

If we lose this fight to protect the Village Green status of Woodcock Hill there will be a precedent for developers to continue to erode the green spaces that generations have spent so much time to protect and the green belt, parks and amenity areas will be next.

We are calling on all residents, wildlife enthusiasts, community leaders, politicians to sign our petition which we will deliver to government to put a stop to these damaging proposals to take away the very community in our town.
