A-Frame Signs are good for Business

A-Frame Signs are good for Business
The Issue
The independent retail businesses in Old Town Alexandria are truly unique and have been the source of pride for economic development efforts seeking to lure businesses to the local area. Small independent retail businesses in Old Town Alexandria don't have the luxury of large marketing budgets. We rely on the City's charm and historical attractions to bring visitors to the area. As such, we have to be creative in drawing visitors into our stores by way of cute window displays, appropriate signage, and clever messaging on A-frame signs. The City's sudden enforcement of A-frame sign regulations is not only economically discriminatory against retail businesses, but it sends the message that the City is not business friendly. Further, it puts retail within the historic district at a disadvantage when neighboring business districts are not forced to abide by these same strict enforcement standards. We urge the City to reconvene a committee of concerned retail business owners to find a solution that is equitable to all.
