Save the Old Deanery Wells

Did you know that the Old Deanery on Wells Cathedral Green is for sale? That the owner (the Diocese of Bath & Wells)  wants to sell it to a private buyer rather than to the Wells Community?
We would like your support in saving it.
Wells can be justly proud of its extraordinary historic buildings including its Cathedral. The Old Deanery on Cathedral Green is hidden behind tall stone walls. Inside is a magnificent 15th century house, various outbuildings, and the remarkable 16th century Turner Herb garden. With the Cathedral, Vicars’ Close and The Bishop’s Palace, The Old Deanery completes the famous group of Mediaeval buildings that attract visitors from all over the world.

In partnership with a renowned local heritage developer, the community group  wants to buy the building and garden to benefit Wells and boost its economic future. We have offered a substantial cash price to the Diocese which they have not accepted; rather they want to sell it to a private buyer at the highest price. The Diocese could sell it to us by taking into account the value of the community bid benefitting both Wells and the Church’s other heritage assets. We want The Old Deanery to become an art gallery or museum of international standing, and to become a dynamic hub for the many community activities in Wells after Covid lockdown.

We are asking you to save the Old Deanery and its Garden for Wells, for Wells and for all of us. We believe the owner has a responsibility to everyone who lives in Wells. If you agree, please sign this petition or email us, now. Wells could be an international centre for the arts and have a strong community hub. Its future is very much in your hands.
