Make it easier for important issues to get voted on in Oklahoma.

The Issue

An initiated state statute, also known as an initiative statute, is a new law that a state adopts via the ballot initiative process. Citizens of Oklahoma may initiate statewide legislation via ballot measures in the form of either initiated state statutes or initiated constitutional amendments. Relative to other states that allow statewide ballot initiatives, Oklahoma's laws make it very difficult to qualify an initiative for the ballot. Signatures for a citizen initiative, whether it is an initiated state statute or an initiated constitutional amendment, must be filed within 90 days of the time that the initiative proponent filed the petition with the Oklahoma Secretary of State. The number of signatures required to qualify initiatives is tied to the amount of votes cast for the governor in the last election, for state statutes that number is 8%. In 2016 that number was 65,987 signatures. That has to be collected within 90 days. It's an uphill battle and it is not a design that promotes new ideas being voted on. I am asking that the state of Oklahoma makes it easier to get these initiatives on the ballot. 90 days is far too short of a time frame to draw enough attention to a topic and get mass amounts of signatures. I would like to see at least 9 months if not a years time to get an accurate vote of the people.
