Medicaid Coverage for Modern Dehydration Lice Treatment in Oklahoma

The Issue

Head lice is exploding in Oklahoma due to the arrival of Super Lice (Pesticide Resistant Lice.)  Today, over the counter treatments are effective less than 25% of the time when used at home.  This means many children have and spread head lice for weeks, months, or even years before they can overcome the infestation.

Modern dehydration treatments are over 99% effective and require no patient compliance.  They can be completed in as little as 45 minutes.  However, they cost $99 per treatment for low income families.

Coverage of this expense would not only help low-income families, but the entire community, as exposure rates would fall dramatically. Currently lice positive rates run as high as 8% for elementary age girls.  Coverage could reduce that number to less than 1%.
