Teenagers who are in DHS Custody And are labeled "High Risk" Are Most Always Stuck in shelters or group homes & Do not have the opportunity to continue Their Drive practice Or even take their Drivers tests because they are Not allowed to drive state Cars Due to liability Issues, I was told this personally As I was one of these kids. Due to not having this opportunity, These kids Lose all knowledge they gained in Drivers Ed, So by the time they are ready and able to Practice for their Drivers test They're Aged out & In My personal experience Aren't Comfortable behind the wheel at all so it hinders them from Being able to start their adult lives, Therefore They Have a big risk of becoming a "Statistic". I AM Speaking for the Kids That Are not lucky enough to find a Loving foster home Because of their history... & Let me tell you from my personal experience YOU ARE NOT YOUR HISTORY! YOU HAVE THE POWER TO BREAK THE CYCLE! We need a program For these kids stuck in shelters or group homes So they can Have designated Vehicles to practice their driving and Take their Drivers tests in... There also comes the question of... "well they're high risk? Isn't that unsafe?" It can be, BUT That's why we would have to develop a Point system Or level system. They'd have to work towards that goal & They'd have to Prove that they are responsible enough to be behind the wheel without pulling any stunts. It would be a Privilege they'd have to Earn of course! But I still think they should have the opportunity to do this!!  We would need people to volunteer to help these kids Learn To drive & To help them practice legally & Safely. This is just a Really GREAT Idea coming from a former "High risk" Foster Kids who Was lucky enough to get out of that system, But unfortunately I fell victim To losing the Knowledge I gained in Drivers Ed. So here I am 20 Years old and still not driving.. When I was informed that us shelter kids were not allowed to practice our driving because we aren't allowed to drive state cars It crushed My confidence.. So this is why I'm wanting to Do something!! These kids are already broken enough & Feel like they Have NO Control over their lives. We could at least Help them feel Like they can Accomplish driving! I Just came up with this idea, so I know there isn't Alot of details, But that comes with it. This is a process and I'm also looking for people who would be interested in helping me develop This. I Think it would be Awesome to have A Center where the Shelter & Group home staff Can Take the kiddos Who have their privileges To And they can Practice the driving There With volunteers who have passed background checks & Are cleared with DHS!
