The glorious mid-century modern First Christian Church in Oklahoma City is for sale, and even though it's on the National Register of Historic Places, the Okie Mod Squad has learned from very reliable sources that a potential buyer may want to demolish the building for development.  Sadly, the church is not located in a Historic Preservation (HP) district and there are no protections in place that would call for any kind of HP Commission review if a buyer requests a demolition permit.  In other words, the exact same thing could happen to the church that happened to the Founders Bank in 2018 (https://newsok.com/article/5611004/mid-century-landmark-founders-bank-being-torn-down).

There is a possible solution, however.  The City Council has the authority, ability, and even the responsibility to declare the First Christian Church a landmark.  If the church is declared a landmark, any demo permit would have to be reviewed by the HP Commission and the public would have a chance to participate in the review process before any kind of demo permit could be issued.

The Okie Mod Squad is asking you to sign this petition asking the City Council to make the church a landmark.  It will be presented to council members as proof that the First Christian Church is valued by the community and worthy of the declaration.
