My name is Jake Hertzman, a current sophomore baseball player at Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) was forced to cancel all Spring 2020 sports, including baseball.  As the COVID-19 situation has continued developing, the summer travel baseball season has been shortened and could potentially be cancelled.  As a result, high school baseball players may not play again until the Spring 2021 season.  For these reasons, I am petitioning the OHSAA to add a supplemental baseball season in Fall 2020 in addition to the normally scheduled Spring 2021 season.

High school baseball is more than a sport for student athletes.  It provides structure, discipline and a social network which is so critical in the development and growth of young student athletes.  The impact of this should not be underestimated.

Like all other sports, baseball requires an extraordinary amount of training and preparation.  Similar to academics, a long layoff results in regression and deterioration of skills.  In academics, it is referred to as the summer slide.  It is not difficult to imagine the severity of this slide in athletics if student athletes are forced to miss an entire year of baseball.  No matter how hard a player works on their own, without the intensity of game competition, the skills they have worked so hard to build over many years will suffer considerably.

Last but not least, college coaches are able to start contacting players either June 15th or September 1st of their junior year.  Due to the timing of high school baseball in the spring, colleges do not typically recruit based on the performance of high school seniors.  Consequently, for current high school juniors, the loss of the 2020 spring and summer season means the loss of their most critical time for recruiting. A supplemental Fall 2020 season would provide a great starting platform for the recruiting of rising juniors while also giving rising seniors the chance to show what they can do before national signing day in the winter.

With a sport like baseball having its own dedicated field at most high schools, there would be no scheduling or field conflicts in the fall.  Additionally, the weather is conducive to playing baseball through the end of October. With the money already allocated, but unused for the cancelled Spring 2020 season, the addition of a supplemental Fall 2020 season should not create a financial burden for Ohio school districts.  As mentioned earlier, there is a chance that summer travel baseball will be cancelled. On the other hand, if summer baseball is to go on, even if shortened, the players will be ready to go and prepared to play against high school competition for the fall high school baseball season.  This should make for a very competitive fall season.

With the current possibility of no baseball until Spring 2021, student athletes around the state of Ohio would benefit greatly from a supplemental fall baseball season.  Please show your support for this supplemental Fall 2020 baseball season proposal by signing this petition.  Thank you!
