Vote NO to Ohio Senate Bill 248

Ohio SB 248 has been introduced by Senator Cafaro and Co-Sponsored by Senators Brown, Turner, and Schiavoni.

Ohio SB 248 does not address the underlying issue of Child Abuse and instead focuses on removing the rights of parents to educate their child(ren) in the way they feel is appropriate. This law specifically targets homeschool and e-school families. Instead of focusing on homeschool  and e-school families, what is needed are stricter penalties on child abuse and better follow-ups by the public children services agency.

The bill being introduced recommends amending sections 3313.60, 3314.06, and 3321.04. The revisions to the above Revised Code would require a public children services agency to recommend whether a child should be admitted to an internet - or computer-based community school or excused by the school district superintendent from attendance at school for home education.

Ohio SB 248 recommends the public children services agency to conduct an in-person meeting at least two times during the school year, if the excuse is granted. This in-person meeting is to be with the person whom submitted the application for the child to be schooled at home and the child in which the application was submitted for.

Pulled directly from the teddyslaw.org website:

"We want to see it illegal to pull your child out of public school and put them in home school when there is an open children services case. We would also like to see things inside of children services change. We would like to ensure that there are no longer appointments being made when children services responds to a case. In addition if no contact is made by the second visit we would like to see a search warrant being issued to enter the home. Local police and children services need to be able to work side by side to serve and protect our children." ~ Shawn Tedesco and the Team Teddy Team

No where in the family's mission statement do they directly attack homeschooling. They want to see changes in the children's services agency and a way to protect children from being removed from a brick and morter school when there is an open case of child abuse.
