Justice for Demetrius
Justice for Demetrius
Demetrias Vinson Was 18 years old When he was sentenced To 99 years in prison without Parole. Demetrias is in Jail for life for Robbery charges. Demetrias had an Unsettling childhood. His mother passed away when he was 12 years old in a car accident, she was pregnant with his twin siblings. A few short years later his brother committed suicide. .He was diagnosed with Biopolar Disorder not Long after this. He also suffers from PTSD. Demetrias was deeply effected by his mothers passing, and was already on a path to self destruction. A lost, hurt, and angry child he was dragged in to a lifestyle a child/teenager has no business being involved in. In October 2014 Demetrius and his Co defendant committed a robbery at a mini mart and a mobile phone store. Demetrius and his co defendant were both armed with 9mm pistols. They stole money from the registers and attempted to damage CCTV. When later arrested Demetrias was told if he accepted the states plea deal he would serve 20 years in prison with the chance at parole. When this plea bargain was offered to him Demetrias was not accompanied by Legal counsel, and he shouldn’t have been allowed to make any decisions without it; he was also under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time. What he didn’t know was this plea put him at a home invasion and 2 other robberies, that occurred in and around the same parts of town in the 2 weeks in which the Store Robberies took place. When he accepted the states plea deal, He was never given the right to a proper trial, meaning he wasn’t prosecuted in front of a jury, just the defence and himself. Had he been given the chance to a fair and proper trial, eye witnesses put him at a different side of town during the time frame when the home invasion took place. There are a lot of gaps in Demetrias’s case that haven’t been accounted for. Demetrias was charged with 21 counts, with Gun specifications on all of his charges.
Demetrias’s Co defendant was sentenced to 50 years for the same crime, and recently got his sentenced reduced to 29 years. For the same involvement. Demetrius shouldn’t Receive life for a crime that didn’t involve murder. Demetrius was broken young man who deserved a chance to rehabilitate himself.
We are going to prove to society that he is not a threat like the state has said he is. We hope with everybody’s support that we can appeal his sentencing for a 3rd time, and get his sentence commuted from life in prison to 29 years with chance at parole. He knows that what he has done is totally unacceptable, and is deeply ashamed of himself and his actions. He wants to better himself and have a chance to become the person he should have been. He has completed his GED And he is eager to find something else to study so he can work hard to repay society for the crimes he committed as a teenager.
Rehabilitation is key in order to show that re integration to society is possible. Demetrias shows clear signs that he is rehabilitating himself. He has completed over 30 courses in prison including those involving mental health, anger management, and drug and alcohol recovery. He has held a job for the last 2 years as a janitor, And He hasn’t been in trouble in prison for the last 2 years.
He has a 14 year old sister he wishes to get out for and support in the future.
Demetrias has Sought friendship within myself. He has shown to be a funny, kind, and caring young man, who always has a smile no matter the circumstances. With the right guidance, and support he will be able to turn his life around.
Demetrias is housed in a maximum security prison in Ohio. He has suffered violence and police brutality whilst he has been inside. Please spare thought for Demetrius. Everybody should be allowed a chance to change. Please help us on our journey. Please help us get him a second chance, and some hope.
Thank you for your time.
