My wife and I are both living on Social Security only and use a CPAP to keep us breathing at night because of Sleep Apnea. I had my CPAP since 2008 and my wife has had hers since 2009. Medicare pays for more CPAP supplies than Medicaid does in the state of Ohio. I know there are some states that are even worse than Ohio when it comes to the replacement schedule. This needs to change. The recommended frequency to replace a cushion is once a month, the mask once every three months, and the tubing once every six months. With Ohio Medicaid the replacement schedule for a mask with a cushion and head gear is 1 once every year. No tubing, and no water chamber. The state of Ohio will pay for 1 disposable filter a month and 1 non-disposable filter once every 2-3 months. Seams to me the state of Ohio will pay for the filters more often than other important items. If your water is too hard and has chemicals in the water this can cause the cushion to become dingy and leave a residue on the cushion after it dries. This can cause skin irritation to some people with allergies or skin sensitivity like it does to my wife. We found out that we have to buy more distilled water to wash the cushion in to prevent this residue from forming on the cushion after it dries. This is even more costly than what it should be for those who are disabled and living on a fixed income that shouldn't have to keep sacrificing in order to have what we need.
