Lauren Johnson started this petition to Ohio House of Representatives and

In light of pride month, I recently had a conversation with a transgender man in regards to the horrible “therapeutic” methods used against the LGBTQIA+ community. Upon research, I discovered that conversion therapy is STILL a widespread issue across the US, affecting hundreds of thousands of minors and adults alike. Conversion therapy is a practice aimed at changing or altering one’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Currently, only 7 cities in the state of Ohio have enforced laws restricting (not necessarily banning) conversion therapy by issuing a $200 fine for every day a minor is administered to conversion therapy. Not only are these laws filled with loopholes, but counting the 7 cities that have enforced laws regarding conversion therapy, only 15% of the LGBTQIA+ community is protected in the state of Ohio. In February of 2020, State Rep. Mary Lightbody (D-Westerville) introduced legislation that would ban certain practices from issuing conversion therapy throughout the state of Ohio. This bill, however, never went through, in part (I believe) due to the worldwide pandemic, halting progress. My goal for this petition is to educate people on the likes of conversion therapy and the harm it causes to those unwillingly bonded to these systems, as well as advancing the legislation proposed by State Representative Lightbody.

Following are some statistics done by the San Francisco State University, finding that "compared with LGBTQ young people who were not rejected or were only a little rejected by their parents and caregivers because of their gay or transgender identity, highly rejected LGBTQ young people were:

- 8 times more likely to have an attempted suicide

- 6 times more likely to report high levels of depression

- 3 times more likely to use illegal drugs

These studies don’t include the aftermath or statistics on youth after going to conversion therapy, as these methods are still extremely under-researched and misunderstood.

Please sign this petition, if not for yourself, for anyone and everyone you love and care about in your life. Despite political or religious differences, we can all agree that these methods used to “change” or “convert” people into what’s considered acceptable by their community are extremely inhumane and in violation of basic human rights. Thank you for your support.
