Responsible Size and Daily Limits on Northern Pike in Ohio’s Waters

Responsible Size and Daily Limits on Northern Pike in Ohio’s Waters
Why this petition matters
The northern pike (Esox lucious) is an incredible game fish native to Ohio’s waters. Unlike many game fish in Ohio, the northern pike does not currently have any seasons, size limits or daily catch limits listed in Ohio’s fishing regulations. The northern pike is an aggressive toothy fish, capable of reaching substantial size, making it a stellar quarry for fisherman.
These wonderful fish take quite a long time to reach sexual maturation, and are highly vulnerable to over harvest during spawning periods. Thus, I propose to the fisheries managers of Ohio’s wonderful waters, a responsible set of regulations on this species.
Giving these fish a break from currently legal large harvests during the spawn, as well as protecting smaller fish from harvest throughout the year will increase the odds of creating world class fisheries in our state. Limiting the harvest would increase the potential for cohort success and will contribute to healthier populations.
I hope to see others who hold high respect for these amazing fish fighting for responsible regulations as well.
Thank you.
