Israeli chocolate company, Elite, should sell slave-free, Fair Trade chocolate for Passover.
We want to discuss with you the issue of the Elite chocolate.
The problem is not the taste, smell or appearance. The problem is the production of chocolate.
Who picks the cocoa beans? Child slaves.
There are children who work picking cocoa beans to make chocolate. They are taken without their or their parents permission. They barely get food and rest, and sometimes they even get beaten. And in addition, these children are not getting the education they need. They do not attend schools and they don't have all the information they need for life.
This is illegal but unfortunately it is still going on and not in a small amount.
In some Israeli schools other children learn about child labor and are curious about this issue and it is important that children are aware of the things that happen to children their age around the world.
I want to share with you my bat mitzvah project. By the next Passover, Elite will have fair trade chocolate. Why Passover? Because we cannot justify enjoying chocolate made through slave labor to celebrate a holiday of freedom.
Ofra Strauss and Elite Chocolate: Please do not benefit from slavery. Make your chocolate Fair Trade by Passover.
