National Grid owns most of the pipes and wires down which gas and electricity flows in the UK. It's not the most exciting business in the UK but it's one of the most lucrative making them £2.6 Billion in profits last year. As they are a monopoly, OFGEM, the Gas and Electricity Regulator, sets the prices they can charge. Now, National Grid run a similar business in the US but there is a big difference between the two - in the UK they make 2.5x as much in profit as there and they invest more in the US! Their UK profit margin is an incredible 38%! Google make 20%. British Gas make 5%. They are simply allowed to charge too much. Ofgem could change this. They could cut the prices National Grid charge by 25% to get their profit down to US levels. This would save the UK £1.7 Billion and cut a typical energy bill by £57 a year. It's the biggest and simplest thing OFGEM could do to bring down UK energy bills. Even after this price cut, National Grid would still make UK profits of £900 Million.
