Home Security to Protect Our Children

The Issue

As a mother trying to protect her autistic child from eloping, I am petitioning for Code 1966, § 20¾-18 Sec. 18-159. - Interior structure, part (i) to be changed. This code states: (i) Every door available as an exit shall be capable of being opened easily from the inside and without the use of a key.

The reason I am petitioning for this change is simply because a double cylinder deadbolt is the only way of ensuring my autistic child with a history of eloping cannot exit the house. As her mother, I have tried other methods of securing the house to ensure she is safe and cannot run off or wander. Having a double cylinder deadbolt on all doors that allow outside access is the ONLY way to protect my child.

I have made sure that we (all adults) have easy access to the key to ensure a quick and easy escape if an emergency were to arise. We have taken preventative measures to ensure that there is no way any danger that can come of having this type of lock on our home.

Autism is becoming an epidemic. Almost everyone knows someone with an autistic child. We must take any measures possible to ensure the safety of our children. Especially the children who have a habit of eloping, those who are non-verbal and those attracted to water. All of these are common with children and adults on the spectrum. Please help me make a change. Please sign this petition.
