I am creating this petition with the goal of fighting the grotesquely high utility bills from CenterPoint Energy that we are forced to pay in Evansville, IN and the surrounding area. Customers are seeing rate increases of %100 or more on their monthly utility bills. They are receiving poor customer service care and are given little to nothing in regards to assistance or payment plans.

CenterPoint is the only energy company in our area. This factor and our need to consume energy is aggressively exploited in the form of astronomical costs. The average income of an Evansville resident is around $25,000. Two bedroom apartments typically start at $600 per month. The math is clear. If customers are forced to take on bills double than what they are accustomed to pay, we are going to have a crisis of families choosing between food or the utility bill. In some cases, people may try to stick out the cold and put themselves at risk during the coming winter. This tends to snowball into waves of "crime" when people are largely at a disadvantage to cover the costs of living. 

How is this justifiable? What purpose does it serve to extract so much wealth from the pockets of our community that we cannot enjoy other goods and services our local economy provides? Where is our choice in what energy company to use?

I want to get the attention of our city with this petition. I want local voices heard. I want comments from our mayor.
