Navi Mumbai and Uran wet lands are conservation reserves

The Issue

The Talawe wetlands near NRI complex and training ship Chanakya (TSC) in Navi Mumbai must be conserved. Any developmental activities which may lead to destruction of this natural vegetation needs to be opposed. The areas of NRI (21.9 ha), TSC (14 ha) in Navi Mumbai  Panje (124 ha), Bhendkhal (8 ha), and Belpada (30 ha) in Uran needs protection as new developmental projects of CIDCO may harm its natural vegetation and may lead to a environmental disbalance.

In 2017, CIDCO rejected the idea of categorizing these areas as wetlands, CIDCO claims that these wetlands were superficially created by local fishermen who broke several bunds in order to carry out their fishing activities which lead to creek water seep into these lands.

However, recently the idea of making these supposed wetlands a conserved reserve was rejected by CIDCO. Stating, ‘these are developable land parcels and salt pans.

CIDCO is planning on developing a golf course and 17 buildings with 1564 flats and 20 offices. These lands are breeding grounds for flamingoes who migrate in the time period between September to may. The migration stopped due to human intervention, although amid corona-virus lockdown, various human activities were limited and flamingoes found their way back to these breeding grounds and they were seen in large numbers. CIDCO intend to destroy this natural breeding ground by labelling it as developmental land. Wee need to raise our voices to stop this move and save our environment.
