This year's Rath Yatra was like no other. For the first time in its history, Lord Jagannath, his brother Balbhadra and sister Subhadra's gigantic chariots were rolled on the streets of Puri without the sea of devotees.
The holy festival usually attracts thousands of people from all over the world. This year, however, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the Rath Yatra was held in a restricted manner. The Supreme Court recently gave conditional approval to conduct the annual festival which takes place in Puri, Odisha. As a preventive measure, the administration allowed only 500 people to pull each chariot, provided they all had tested negative for COVID-19.
The seven-day festival which started on June 23 saw a large number of priests and temple attendants at the temple. However, public participation was kept to a bare minimum amid India's fight against coronavirus.
For the millions of devotees across the world, live telecast of the Rath Yatra was organised which gave them glimpses of the Holy Trinity on their TV, mobile phones and laptop.
