Remove Oculus' DRM that blocks mods that add support for third party headsets

The Issue

When the Oculus Rift first went on sale Oculus Founder Palmer Lucky said publicly that Oculus would not block mods that add support for third party VR headsets.

This is no longer the case. Oculus has blocked these "compatibility mods" by making it so their store no longer functions if a Rift is not connected to the PC. This decision hurts a lot of people:

  • Owners of third party VR headsets cannot legally use mods to play the games they purchased on Oculus Home.
  • Oculus Home customers are effectively locked in to to buying Oculus hardware from here on out.
  • Oculus exclusive developers lose out on selling their software to non-rift users.

I care about this because I love VR and I love PC gaming. It pains me to see VR being used an excuse to use DRM to block mods and introduce console like hardware exclusivity on the PC.

Oculus has not officially commented on this and are seemingly hoping people will forget about them disregarding consumer rights and going back on their word.

By Signing this petition you show Oculus that you care about the freedom to use mods and hardware as they originally promised.
