Have OCPS cancel school this Friday-Monday due to Hurricane Irma

Texas has just suffered a devastating blow due to Hurricane Harvey, and now Hurricane Irma is rolling around the corner and coming in strong, threating the Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Florida, and possibly even Georgia and South Carolina. It has already been reported as the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic. It is a Category 5 with max speeds of up to 180mph and has already claimed the lives of at least four people. A handful of county's and colleges are already cancelling school in Florida due to the storm, such as UCF, Valencia, Keiser University, FAMU College of Law, Seminole County, Osceola County, Marion County, Bethune-Cookman University, Volusia County, and Polk County, with districts such as Sumter County and Lake County following an early release on Friday. Even still, Orange County decides to keep business as usual, and expects students to show up this Friday and Monday despite the consequences that leaving our families and our homes during this time may have. They do not take into consideration whether or not we may have family that live close to the coasts and need to come stay with us during the weekend. Better yet, they do not take into consideration our families that may live in smaller islands Southeast off the coast Florida, and how we may want 100% of our attention and care on trying to help them. The last thing that students want right now is to worry about having to go to school and work on assignments without a care in the world while our families and our lives are being threatened. Two simple days off of school may not mean much to our school board, but to us it can seriously make a difference.
