Why this petition matters

Started by Stephanie Ramos

On February 3, 2021, at the Oceanside City Council meeting, council members proposed the closure of a beloved community pool—Brooks Street Pool. Brooks Street Pool has historically been used by the low income families of District 1 and Oceanside High School’s swim and water polo teams.

An Oceanside Council member proposed the closure of Brooks Street Pool as a prerequisite to funding the Aquatic Center at El Corazón, eventhough, there are sufficient funds to add the Aquatics center and to also keep Brooks Street Pool open.

As such, closing Brooks Street Pool would essentially take community benefits from a low income area and allocate those benefits to a more affluent neighborhood. As Mayor Sanchez stated in her opposition to the closure, “you would be taking from the poor and giving to the rich.” Thus, marginalizing a low-income community.

Please sign this petition in favor of keeping Brooks Street Pool open so that low income students can continue to have this community resource.
