Whereas,

the Oblates of Mary Immaculate operated fourty-eight Indian Residential Schools in Canada, including the Kamloops, Marieval, and St. Eugene's Mission Indian Residential Schools;

in the wake of discoveries of many hundreds of unmarked graves on the grounds of these Indian Residential Schools, the Oblates say they're deeply sorry for the harm they caused Indigenous Peoples;

in July 1991, the Oblates pledged themselves to disclose records of their Indian Residential Schools and to collaborate in every way so the full story of Indian Residential Schools might be written and healing might take place;

in June 2021, the Oblates reiterated their commitment to disclose all records about their Indian Residential Schools;

the Oblates admit that their disclosure is not complete and recognize that, without a full record of their Indian Residential Schools, the truth will not be known; and

the Oblates acknowledge that delays in disclosing records of their Indian Residential Schools cause ongoing distrust, distress, and trauma to Indigenous Peoples.

We petition the Oblates,

  1. to identify every record of their involvement in the operation of Indian Residential Schools, including any record maintained by them and in their possession, and any record that has been destroyed, or transferred to another organization.
  2. to provide a certified copy of every record in their possession to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR).
  3. to retrieve every record that has been transferred to another organization and to provide a certified copy to the NCTR.
  4. to publish the history of any consultation and any decision regarding the provision of a certified copy of any document to the NCTR, including the participation of third parties already identified by the Oblates:
    1. bishops and other leaders in the Catholic Church;
    2. federal and provincial governments;
    3. First Nations;
    4. universities, archives, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
  5. to publish and resource a plan, including tasks, responsibilities, timelines, and budget, to complete a full review of every record of the Oblates' involvement in the operation of Indian Residential Schools, and to provide a certified copy of every record to the NCTR.
