Objection to ‘Little India’ Docklands , support a truly Multicultural Precinct
The issue
Docklands, a vibrant melting pot of cultures, is home to a diverse community that encompasses people from all cultural backgrounds. Positioning it as 'Little India' threatens to overshadow this rich tapestry, risking the marginalization of the broader community in favor of promoting a singular cultural identity.
We understand and appreciate the beauty of Indian culture, yet it is crucial to ensure that all cultures that contribute to the uniqueness of Docklands are celebrated equally and respectfully. The proposed rebranding could inadvertently lead to feelings of exclusion for the many communities that coexist in Docklands, weakening the spirit of multiculturalism that defines our neighborhood.
Statistics show that Docklands is one of Australia’s fastest-growing precincts, comprising residents from over 150 countries. This immense diversity is a strength that must be acknowledged and preserved. By labeling it ‘Little India’, we risk overshadowing other cultural contributions, thus weakening the cohesion we proudly share.
Instead of this singular focus, we urge the planning committee to consider initiatives that highlight the multicultural essence of Docklands:
-Establish a multicultural precinct strategy that represents a wide range of cultures, rather than focusing on a single cultural theme
- Curate a diverse mix of retail and dining options reflecting different international cuisines and businesses
- Organise regular multicultural festivals and events to celebrate various cultural traditions throughout the year
- Create cultural exchange programs and workshops (e.g. art, music, language, food) to encourage community participation
- Ensure balanced urban planning that promotes cultural diversity, social cohesion, and long-term sustainability
We call upon local government officials, urban planners, and cultural leaders to revisit this rebranding proposal. Let us work together to ensure Docklands remains a place where diversity is cherished, and all communities feel equally valued and represented.
Help us in preserving the integrity of Docklands as a truly multicultural precinct. Sign this petition - Objection to ‘Little India’ Docklands , support a truly Multicultural Precinct!
