The Issue
Ocean Shores, Washington, is not just any place—it's home. This beautiful coastal city stands as a beacon for free speech—a fundamental pillar of our democracy. The very essence of Ocean Shores is intertwined with its vibrant community events and the expression of varied perspectives. However, a new threat looms on our horizon.
The proposed amendment to Chapter 5.24 of the Ocean Shores Municipal Code seeks to redefine how special event permits are managed. On the surface, it appears to be a mere administrative adjustment, but it carries with it grave constitutional implications. At its core, this amendment poses a direct challenge to our First Amendment rights—the freedom of speech and expression that have long defined our community.
Our primary concerns about the proposed ordinance are rooted in its potential to inadvertently stifle free speech. Our events—be they peaceful protests, cultural festivals, or public gatherings—serve as vital platforms for dialogue and change. Restricting these events could suppress the voices that make our community so unique and vibrant.
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees us the freedom to express ourselves without unwarranted governmental interference. This proposed amendment, if passed, risks undermining these sacred constitutional protections by creating barriers that could discourage or even prevent events that facilitate the free exchange of ideas.
We urge the Mayor and City Council of Ocean Shores to reconsider this proposal. Establishing a healthy dialogue with the community can uncover constructive solutions that preserve both public order and our constitutional rights. Perhaps instead of restrictive measures, the city can look into enhancing permit processes that facilitate rather than hinder public discourse.
By preserving our ability to gather, speak, and share ideas openly, we maintain the democratic ethos that Ocean Shores is so proud of. We call on our fellow residents and supporters of free speech to join us in this crucial stand—to defend the rights that define our community.
Please stand with us in safeguarding our foundational freedoms. Sign this petition to express your objection to the proposed amendment and to advocate for the protection of free speech in Ocean Shores.
