The Issue

The residents of Greenpoint, Harlem, and the surrounding community, take pride in our vibrant community, cherished green spaces, and thriving local businesses. We are united in opposing the proposed rezoning for data centers at Pumpkin Center, a move that threatens to undermine the character and quality of life in our beloved neighborhood.

Data centers, while essential for modern tech infrastructure, require significant resources, including massive amounts of electricity and cooling, which could greatly strain our local utilities and increase our carbon footprint. Moreover, such facilities tend to be large, industrial structures that could disrupt the aesthetic of our neighborhood, reduce property values, and potentially lead to noise and traffic congestion issues.

The proposal to rezone land for these data centers does not align with the broader vision we hold for Harlem—a vision that prioritizes sustainable development, the preservation of residential community life, and the enhancement of public spaces for recreation and community bonding.

Furthermore, the lack of thorough public consultations and assessments on the environmental and social impacts only amplifies our concerns. We demand a more transparent approach, involving rigorous assessments and community engagement processes before any significant zoning changes occur.

We urge the relevant city planning authorities to reconsider this rezoning proposal and to seek alternative locations that better suit such industrial developments without jeopardizing residential areas.

Join us in preserving the essence of Harlem by signing this petition. Your support is crucial to ensuring that our neighborhood remains a vibrant, livable, and sustainable community. Sign now and help us protect Greenpoint and Harlem’s future.
