OBEROI: LUXURY SHOULDN'T COME FROM A CAGE
The Issue
The Oberoi Group, operating through EIH Limited, runs Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, Trident Hotels, and Maidens Hotel across 30 hotels in seven countries.
Its "Elements by Oberoi" sustainability framework is built on Earth, Water, and Air. The group has public targets for zero waste to landfill by 2030, 50% renewable electricity by 2030, and net zero by 2050. At its most recent annual general meeting, Executive Chairman Arjun Oberoi told shareholders the company had strengthened initiatives focused on "energy efficiency, responsible sourcing, water reduction, and water conservation."
Responsible sourcing, but not for hens.
The Oberoi Group has no animal welfare policy. It has made no commitment on cage-free eggs. No timeline, and no public position at all.
Hens in battery cages spend nearly their entire lives in wire enclosures so restrictive that they cannot spread their wings, turn around freely, nest, perch, or dust bathe. This is the system behind the eggs served at Oberoi breakfast tables every morning.
Oberoi's competitors have already taken a position. Marriott, Hilton, Accor, Radisson, Choice Hotels, and BWH Hotels have all made cage-free egg commitments. Mandarin Oriental, Oberoi's own flagship international partner through the O&MO Alliance, reported 93% cage-free sourcing as of 2024.
Oberoi has been asked directly. Bharat Initiative for Accountability, a coalition of 16 animal welfare organizations in India, has written to Oberoi executives repeatedly since 2024, hand-delivered a letter to its Vice President of Procurement, and passed on postcards from concerned guests. The company has still not committed.
Guests deserve to know what is behind the food they are served. Hens deserve better than a cage.

- Publicly commit to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs, both shell and liquid, across all its brands and all countries where it operates.
- Publish a dated roadmap showing how and by when it will reach 100%.
- Report progress publicly every year until the transition is complete.
