OBEROI: LUXURY SHOULDN'T COME FROM A CAGE
The Issue
The Oberoi Group operates a portfolio of luxury hotels across 7 countries, including Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, Trident Hotels and Maidens Hotel.
Its Elements by Oberoi sustainability framework is built around Earth, Water and Air, with targets including sourcing 50% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030. At its most recent Annual General Meeting, Executive Chairman Arjun Oberoi said: “We believe that luxury and sustainability are complementary objectives.”
Yet when it comes to the eggs served at its hotels, there are no public standards for the welfare of the hens who produce them.
Responsible sourcing, but not for hens.
The Oberoi Group has no publicly available animal welfare policy and has made no public commitment to source cage-free eggs. There is no target, no timeline and no stated position on the issue.
Hens used for egg production can spend their lives confined in battery cages: cramped wire enclosures that prevent them from carrying out basic behaviours such as spreading their wings, turning around freely, nesting, perching and dust bathing. Yet Oberoi continues to source eggs from caged hens.
Oberoi’s competitors have already taken a position.
Marriott, Four Seasons, Hilton, Accor, Radisson, Hyatt, Choice Hotels and Best Western have all made public commitments to cage-free eggs.
Mandarin Oriental, Oberoi’s international partner through the O&MO Alliance, reported that 93% of its eggs were cage-free in 2024.
Oberoi has been asked directly.
Bharat Initiative for Accountability, a coalition of 16 animal welfare organisations in India, has repeatedly raised Oberoi’s egg sourcing with the Group since 2024. We have written to Oberoi executives, hand-delivered a letter to its Vice President of Procurement, and passed on postcards from concerned guests.
Oberoi has yet to make a commitment.
Guests deserve to know where their food comes from. And hens deserve better than a cage.
Ask The Oberoi Group to go cage-free.
Sign the petition and ask Oberoi to make cage-free sourcing part of its responsible sourcing commitments.
Earth. Water. Air. It’s time Oberoi added the element it has been missing: animal welfare.
