With Oakwood Schools releasing the news of artificial intelligence (AI) being introduced into our schools, it is now that we must act to prevent this from happening. The policy allows the use of different AI sources for children from grades 5-12.  Our school district banned cell phone usage during school hours because it was a distraction to learning.  However, the same administration is choosing to allow students to use AI for school assignments which is arguably a much bigger and more dangerous distraction.  In addition, AI is incredibly harmful to children's learning pathways in their brains. NPR states, “Using AI in education can ‘undermine children’s foundational development.'" Implementing AI usage beginning at the 5th grade level will have this impact on our younger students. This is not what we want for the next generation. Finally, the impact of AI on the environment is devastating. The National Education Association notes, “AI will intensify greenhouse gas emissions, consume increasing amounts of energy, and require larger quantities of natural resources.” We cannot be the "Green Oakwood" we pride ourselves on being if we are actively playing a role in destroying the planet we live on. Overall, there are a plethora of reasons that Oakwood Students should not accept the implementation of this AI policy. A few are the environmental impact,  the destruction of learning pathways in children's brains, and the notable distraction from learning it causes. While there are more reasons, this is why you should do your part to keep Oakwood Schools as excellent as the titles we pride ourselves on by protesting the AI policy.
