SMART AND SAFE development at Laurel Plaza

The Issue

Blackhawk Development Group is at it again. The owner of Laurel Plaza succeeded in bringing a 24 hour mini-mart and gas station to our quiet little neighborhood and school zone last year, despite local residents' opposition, and now they are asking our City Council to approve Conditional Use Permits to add a GIANT Quick-Quack car wash and a McDonald's dual lane Drive-Thru to this same "Plaza".

Laurel Plaza was always intended to be a destination plaza where our residential neighborhoods could find quality retail establishments and a pedestrian friendly area to shop, eat and hang out, Not a PIT STOP along Laurel speedway.

We need to stand up as a community and let our council and Blackhawk Development know that these types of car-centric businesses do not belong right in the middle of our neighborhoods, or in school zones. Oakley City Council CAN and MUST deny both of these CUPs. This parcel is zoned Retail Business, which does not inherently allow for drive throughs or car washes. Retail Business zoning per Oakley's own zoning ordinance (9.1.504) states "Purpose of the RB district is to retain small-scale businesses and facilities" Neither a McDonald's Drive-Thru nor a Quick Quack car wash can be described as a "small-scale" business. Both are more suited to sites closer to major freeways.

Please help us spread the word and let Oakley City Council know our city can do better!
