Make classes this semester credit/no credit at Oakland University

I think we can all agree that we are in the midst of some of the craziest couple of months in U.S. history due to COVID-19, also known as the "Coronavirus." Given the extenuating circumstances surrounding this virus and the move to online classes for the rest of the semester (6 weeks), Oakland University should move to make all classes for this current semester evaluated on a pass/no pass or credit/no credit basis. The classes this semester should have no bearing on any students grade point average. The reasoning for this is:
1. Some students may lack accessibility to the required tools, such as wireless internet, to conduct their learning online. This is especially the case after Governor Whitmer's decision to shut down in-house dining at the majority of locations across the state. It would not be fair to those students to be held to the same standard as those that do have access. This simple accessibility issue could cause some students' GPA to lower.
2. Some students may have difficulties learning online versus being face to face with a trained professor. It is not equitable to change the way we have to learn and expect the outcome to be the same. This again might cause a students GPA to be lowered.
3. Some students may not feel prepared for exams or other important assessments. This will cause lower test results and cause students' GPA to be lower than normal.
So why is a lower GPA a bad thing?
With a lower GPA, there will be many issues. First and foremost, students need a high GPA to gain internships and full-time employment. Yes, it is not the only thing that employers look at, but in a world of algorithms that automatically review your resume and look for desired items, it is hard to say it is not a large potential limiting factor. Secondly, some students need a good GPA to get into their desired program within OU. By moving classes to online, OU is denying the students the ability to compete in some cases and the ability to get into such programs.
So what should be the solution?
The solution is to make all classes from Winter 2020 credit/no credit courses. This solution will provide equality for all students and allow the students to maintain some sense of normalcy in their college careers.
We understand that this virus is not in your control. We didn't choose to be in this situation. We didn't get a say in what happens, but OU administration does have the ability to guide us students in this difficult time.
Please consider something like this Administration of Oakland University.
A very concerned Oakland University Senior
*It should also be noted that there is a lot of students who care about graduate school grades and those who are trying to raise their GPA. There should be some middle ground where students are given the choice on what they want to do.*
