As part of the proposed Bayfair to Baypark project, NZTA are making major changes to Maunganui Rd. They are proposing to remove the underpass at Bayfair meaning local pedestrians and cyclists will need to cross 9 lanes, that’s 60 metres of traffic through multiple sets of lights to get from one side to the other.

The cycle and pedestrian design entering and exiting the area is also extremely poor and sends cyclists in to an industrial road lined with trucks (Owens Pl) in order to navigate towards The Mount. 

We think that removing the underpass will be a disaster  - and one that will be near impossible to fix after the motorway is built. 

This is our chance to future-proof and connect our community for pedestrians and cyclists alike, and give our kids safe and secure pathways to their schools and sports fields.

Bike Mount are advocating to NZTA and our local Councils for a comprehensive, connected pedestrian / cycle network for the Mount, and as part of this we are seeking community support to:

a)     Retain or reconstruct an underpass (or pedestrian/cycle overpass) at Bayfair that is safe, well designed and easily accessed.

b)     Improve pedestrian / cycle access around Bayfair and to the underpass (ie not through the Bayfair carpark which is dangerous)

c)     Link this to a safe, separated cycleway to Bay Park, Mount College, Mount Intermediate and Mount downtown.
