In July of 2020, a man was discharged without conviction after confessing to have impaled a hedgehog (alive) in New Zealand. Though the individual was unable to show compassion towards the poor creature, the judge showed this man all his compassion by discharging him without consequences for his actions. Would the outcome be the same if talking about a kitten or a puppy? Maybe not. The fact that these little creatures are classed as 'pests' does not excuse nor justify their killing in such a horrible manner. Unfortunately, animals are often abused and it is necessary for us to do all that is possible to deter these abuses. Animals cannot defend themselves, and if our government does not do anything to ensure that callous individuals feel deterred from causing harm to innocent creatures, it is unlikely that these abuses will stop or even diminish. Please sign and share the petition to ensure that our representatives advocate for causes we care about, including animal welfare. Animals cannot be heard, but we can, and we should use this ability to advocate for them. The purpose of this petition is to encourage the NZ government to impose harsher punishments for animal abuses and to extend the scope of the Animal Welfare Act, so that individuals do not repeat incidents like this of the impaled hedgehog.
