Lobby New Zealand is calling on the Prime Minister to scrap her two proposals to (1) restrict unvaccinated Aucklanders from leaving Auckland during the summer period, and to (2) create an allocation system to allocate how and when Aucklanders may be able to leave Auckland during the summer.

Let us be clear: Lobby New Zealand supports the vaccination campaign. However, we live in a democracy. Everyone has human dignity, and by nature has individual rights and freedom in choosing how to live their life. When the state takes away these freedoms, for reasons such as reducing Covid transmission, they must therefore be aware that they’re temporarily violating aspects of human dignity and must be very cautious not to overreach individual rights beyond necessary.

Lobby New Zealand is concerned that the Government appears to have not paid a careful thought about this human dignity that the individual is entitled to. These new proposals are not proportionate with the risks of Covid circulating in the community, and therefore are a very concerning overreach.

Another aspect is that these proposals are not practicable. Police checkpoints can never have a capacity to check the hundreds of thousands going in and out of Auckland everyday. As for the allocation system, this will simply not work, even for the vaccinated. What if someone has an event outside of Auckland on a specific day: the birth of a child, a wedding, or saying goodbye to dying loved ones? What if someone wants to visit their family inside Auckland? What if someone has an occupation that requires them to cross the border regularly, say a farmer having a farm on the other side of the border, or someone who flies between Auckland and Wellington? Surely, these people cannot be held up by the proposed allocation system.
