Create a sustainable model for Rural Community Midwifery in the Wanaka region.
The issue
We need the government to act NOW to bring the level of care New Zealand is famous for to Wanaka mothers and babies.
PART 1: We urgently need the funding model for Rural Community Midwives to be updated so that the service can be provided sustainably in our region.
The current funding model for Rural Community Midwifery is catastrophically broken, to the point where we only have one working LMC for a town with a population of 6500+, with 180-200 births predicted in 2018.
PART 2: Upgrade the Southern DHBs proposed “Maternity Hub” for Wanaka to a “Primary Birthing Unit”
Our nearest Primary Birthing Unit is Charlotte Jean, which is an hours drive. Our nearest Tertiary Unit is in Dunedin, which is 3.5hrs drive. Read the Southern DHB's Proposal for a Maternity Hub here:
