Traffic Concerns/Safety - Rte 9, Schodack (New Amazon Warehouse Area)

Issue/Concern

When traveling southbound on Route 9 in Schodack, NY [Rensselaer County] with a posted 55mph speed limit (which increases from 45mph at the 9&20 split), approaching Richwood Drive is extremely unsafe and hazardous for drivers (and pedestrians) as they struggle to exit their neighborhood via Richwood Drive.  It is virtually impossible for drivers to see all of the oncoming traffic due to the reduced line of site and curve of the road as vehicles (including tractor trailers) head towards the new Amazon Warehouse located approximately 800ft past Richwood Drive.  These vehicles travel in excess of 55mph and make it extremely difficult for residents to exit the neighborhood safely.

Pulling into Richwood Drive has also become increasingly difficult with no shoulder to use as a pull off lane.  Pedestrians are now walking to and from the Amazon site crossing at the end of Richwood Drive. Neighborhood residents have encountered numerous incidents where they need to wait on Route 9 for pedestrians to cross while drivers are dangerously stopped on Rte. 9.

Request

As there is (1) not a traffic light at Richwood Drive that slows traffic proceeding south on Route 9, and (2) a 55mph speed limit directly before Richwood Drive and (3) increase in foot, vehicle, and truck traffic to the Amazon Warehouse, we respectfully request (1) a turnoff lane be added to enter Richwood Drive safely to prevent drivers from being rear ended (as there are no sidewalks or crossings) (2) a re-evaluation of speed limit between 9&20 split and Amazon and (3) relocation of the 55mph speed limit sign to be located south of the Amazon Warehouse.

We the undersigned as concerned citizens request that New York State Department of Transportation review this matter immediately.
