Allow Spectators at High School Sports Events

The Issue

High School athletes all over NYS deserve to have spectators at all sporting events. Student athletes and I have been waiting to participate in sports during all of 2020 and now we're able to play but with no one to watch us. As a student athlete myself, I've been waiting to play my senior year with friends and family in the crowd to watch to support my team and me. While COVID-19 presents challenges to large public gatherings, people have shown that this can be done safely. For example, my school (Island Trees High School) has been in school since September of 2020. We've been going to school 5 days a week with some remote students (by choice.) Although we've had 421 students in quarantine through contact tracing, 0 of those students tested positive for COVID-19. The statistics show 2 things. The first thing is that schools aren't the super spreader. Students are getting infected outside of schools and not at schools. The second thing is students can be together without being infected by COVID-19. These statistics are proof that spectators can come to sporting events to support us student athletes safely by using masks and social distancing. We are asking NYS Legislatures to amend their guidance on allowing spectators at high school sporting events. This can be achieved by making school districts exempt from NYS guidance on limits at outdoor gatherings.
